This test is done to determine the water content in soil by calcium carbide method as per IS: 2720 (Part II) – 1973. It is a method for rapid determination of water content from the gas pressure developed by the reaction of calcium carbide with the free water of the soil.
As per IS: 2720 (Part II) - 1973
For quick determination of moisture percentage of materials in powder form like soil, sand, coal, cement, etc. The apparatus is supplied in polished wooden carrying case. The apparatus consists of a pressure vessel with clamp for sealing, rubber sealing gasket, pressure gauge in moisture content 0-25% or 0-50% on wet weight basis, a counter poised balance to weigh the sample, a scoop for measuring carbide reagent, one cleaning brush, set of 4 steel balls and one bottle of calcium carbide (500gm).
